2024-06-08 - Biking Cranbrook to Kimberly and back!

Louise and I woke up to a Calgary Emergency Alert!  There had been a 78" diameter watermain break the night before, which caused not only a lot of flooding, but also drained the Calgary reservoirs to critical levels.  They were asking people to NOT USE water.  Not only no outdoor use, but no use of washing machines, dish washers, and even telling people not to take showers in the morning!  I have never heard of that severe a restriction.  WOW!

Fortunately we had showered the night before after our ride, and were out of the house and heading south again shortly after 8:00.  We decided to drive through Radium, which was very scenic, and only a couple of minutes longer.

The WhatsApp Chatter started up again as soon as we were on the road.  It was Windy at Slave Lake, but Gerry is only frustrated with it because he can't sail.  There was some talk about Wabamun, but Cam has his daughter's graduation so couldn't go.  I am not sure if anyone got out, but there was lots of talk about tomorrow/Friday!

Louise and I arrived in Cranbrook shortly after Noon and checked into our hotel.  I got the bikes ready, and we took first the Rotary Trail, and then the "NorthStar Rails to Trail" route to Kimberly.  Kimberly is quite a bit higher than Cranbrook, so after going downhill to the river, the climb up to Kimberly was very long and tough.  I was on my E-Bike but trying not to use the power.  I did turn it on for a couple of the steep sections where I didn't have enough gears to spin up the hill. It was a lot of work.

We made it to Kimberly without too much difficulty.  Our original plan was to stop at A&W for lunch, but all the kids had just been released from the High School, so we decided to go to the Sullivan Pub instead.  The food and service were excellent, although I probably shouldn't have had the beer before heading home!

After the big climb to get up to Kimberly, we enjoyed the first 15km on the way home as it was all downhill.  After the river there was only about a 6km uphill section before the trail turned more or less flat for the remainder!

It was a great ride with some spectacular views!

Another great day!  I hope at least a few of the gang got out sailing today!  We are planning another ride tomorrow.
